Lesson 1: Position - Review

  1. Whole Piano
    • Listen to the pitch differences of different keys.
    • Get a general feel for piano keys under your fingertips.
  2. Octave Breakdown
    • Every key on the piano has its own letter name.
    • We can separate the piano into different sections by splicing C octaves.
    • Beginners need only focus on the Bass C and Middle C octaves.
  3. Middle C
    • Middle C is the most crucial/central/important key on the piano.
    • Memorize the position of Middle C so you can find it without referring back to the guide picture.
  4. Starting Position
    • The usual starting position requires placing the left hand on the first 5 keys of the Bass C scale and the right hand on the first 5 keys on the Middle C scale.
    • Try to play some notes without moving your hand. If you have difficulty, focus on one hand first, then switch.
  5. Problems?
    • Unwilling Fingers
    • Stuck-up Fingers
    • Slumped Wrists

Practice Suggestions

  1. Concentrate on the Bass C and Middle C Octaves.
