Quick Lesson:

Moonlight Sonata by Ludwig van Beethoven

Opening Theme

...

Notes and finger positions:

Tips to Play:

The opening theme of Moonlight Sonata is fairly easy to play. The first 2 measures consist of ostinatos, repeating patterns, of the same inverted triad (C# minor triad, 2nd inversion, G#-C#-E). The 3rd measure and the measures throughout the song consist of triads and triad inversions. As long as you remember that the finger positions 1-2-4 and you're good at interpreting notes (which I'll assume since you're looking at a fairly advanced piece of music), you'll be fine.

Remember:

1-2-4

Remember the finger positions 1-2-4, since the main theme repeats this pattern of notes.

Triads

Remember that the treble part of the opening theme consists entirely of triads and inverted triads. The triads continue throughout the main theme and the secondary theme.

Problems?

Problem: Can't transition fast enough between triads

Solution: Practice your chord progressions. A good list can be found here.
