Lesson 2: Letters - Review

  1. Letters
    • Every pitch in an octave (8 continuous pitches, excluding half-pitches) has its own letter, ranging from A-G.
    • Each line and space in music notation has its own unique pitch and thus, its own letter name.
    • One way to memorize the letter names of a staff is to use mnemonic devices.
  2. Keyboard
    • Every key on the piano has its own letter name.
    • Middle C is important because it is the central key around which other keys are located around and separates keys played by the right hand from the left.
    • In music notation, Middle C separates notes written on the Treble Clef from notes written on the Bass Clef.
  3. Notes to Keys
    • Every line/space in music notation represents one unique pitch.
    • Every key on the piano represents one unique pitch.
    • Thus, we can easily translate notes to keys and vice versa by understanding pitch.
  4. Treble Keys
    • Notes and keys are interchangeable on the Treble Staff.
  5. Bass Keys
    • Notes and keys are interchangeable on the Bass Staff.
  6. Grand Staff
