Lesson 4: Accidentals - Review

  1. Accidentals
    • An accidental indicates to play a half pitch above/below the written note, depending on the symbol used.
    • There are 3 kinds of accidentals: sharps, flats, and naturals.
    • Accidentals are sustained throughout a measure.
  2. Sharps
    • Sharps tell us to play one half pitch higher than the written note.
  3. Flats
    • Flats tells us to play one half pitch lower than the written note.
  4. Naturals
    • Naturals tell us to play the note as written.
    • Naturals are used to negate the effects of a previous accidental prescribed in the same measure or in the Key Signature.
  5. Key Signature
    • We can write all accidentals in a Key Signature at the beginning of a piece of music.
    • The order of sharps is F, C, G, D, A, E, B.
    • The order of flats is B, E, A, D, G, C, F.
